%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22M.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Zarate%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22M.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Limonta%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22G.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Vezzoli%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22We%20here%20review%20in%20terms%20of%20tectono-magmatic%20setting%20and%20Quaternary%20landscape%20dynamics%20what%20is%20known%20about%20the%20provenance%20of%20Argentine%20dune%20fields%20and%20their%20fluvial%20feeder%20systems%20draining%20the%20Andean%20Cordillera.%20The%20detrital%20signatures%20of%20these%20eolian%20sediments%20were%20previously%20investigated%20based%20on%20either%20framework%20petrography%20and%20heavy%20minerals%20or%20detrital-zircon%20geochronology%2C%20and%20their%20peculiar%20volcaniclastic%20nature%20was%20long%20recognized.%20Compositional%20variability%2C%20however%2C%20was%20only%20broadly%20evaluated%2C%20and%20quantitative%20provenance%20analysis%20based%20on%20a%20systematic%20multimethod%20approach%20across%20the%20entire%20region%20was%20not%20carried%20out%20so%20far.%20For%20this%20reason%2C%20here%20we%20integrate%20original%20and%20previously%20obtained%20petrographic%2C%20heavy-mineral%2C%20and%20detrital-zircon%20geochronology%20data%20to%20present%20the%20first%20comprehensive%20provenance%20study%20of%20dune%20fields%20stretching%20for%201000%20km%20across%20central%20Argentina%20from%20the%20Andean%20piedmont%20to%20the%20Atlantic%20Ocean.%20In%20dune%20fields%20along%20the%20Andean%20retroarc%20basin%2C%20sediment%20composition%20defines%20a%20steady%20northward%20decrease%20in%20volcanic%20detritus.%20This%20reflects%20active%20magmatism%20in%20the%20Southern%20Volcanic%20Zone%20and%20Payenia%20province%20%2838-34S%29%2C%20in%20contrast%20with%20the%20similar%20to%20600-km-long%20Pliocene-Quaternary%20magmatic%20gap%20in%20the%20Pampean%20flat-slab%20segment%20%2833-27S%29%2C%20where%20sediment%20is%20derived%20from%20deeper-seated%20tectono-stratigraphic%20levels%20of%20the%20continental%20arc%20and%20uplifted%20blocks%20of%20retroarc-basin%20basement.%20In%20distal%20Pampean%20lowlands%20extending%20across%20the%20bulge%20and%20backbulge%20depozones%2C%20instead%2C%20sand%20dunes%20display%20notably%20homogeneous%20compositional%20signatures%2C%20indicating%20that%20detritus%20was%20mostly%20generated%20north%20of%2034S%20and%20transported%20by%20a%20paleo-Desaguadero%20trunk%20river%20that%20formed%20during%20southward-progressing%20diachronous%20uplift%20of%20the%20Sierras%20Pampeanas%20since%20the%20late%20Miocene.%20In%20contrast%20with%20huge%20African%20and%20Arabian%20deserts%20that%20contain%20multiply%20recycled%20quartzose%20to%20pure%20quartzose%20sand%2C%20even%20very%20fragile%20volcanic%20clasts%2C%20plagioclase%20feldspar%2C%20and%20unstable%20ferromagnesian%20minerals%20are%20widespread%2C%20testifying%20to%20largely%20first-cycle%20volcanic%20provenance%20and%20only%20minor%20effects%20of%20mechanical%20breakdown%20and%20chemical%20weathering%20in%20the%20Pampean%20Sand%20Sea.%20During%20the%20Late%20Pleistocene%2C%20after%20a%20first%20southward%20shift%20of%20the%20Desaguadero%20trunk%20river%20possibly%20induced%20by%20increased%20water%20and%20sediment%20discharge%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20penultimate%20glacial%20maximum%2C%20tectonic%20uplift%20eventually%20outpaced%20stream%20power%20during%20the%20last%20glacial%20period.%20Paleo-rivers%20were%20thus%20forced%20to%20shift%20farther%20southwards%2C%20leading%20to%20the%20formation%20of%20an%20integrated%20paleo-Desaguadero%2BColorado%20drainage%20system.%20During%20the%20latest%20Pleistocene-early%20Holocene%2C%20such%20a%20large%20trunk%20river%20fostered%20the%20rapid%20progradation%20of%20a%20wide%20delta%20and%20littoral%20sand%20transport%20all%20along%20the%20shores%20of%20the%20Buenos%20Aires%20Province.%20Climate%20change%20and%20repeated%20waxing%20and%20waning%20of%20glaciers%20through%20the%20Quaternary%20have%20left%20a%20prominent%20mark%20on%20sediment%20distribution%2C%20dominated%20by%20fluvial%20processes%20during%20periods%20of%20high%20fluvial%20discharge%20but%20alternating%20with%20arid%20phases%20characterized%20by%20limited%20transport%20capacity%20and%20vegetation%20cover%2C%20extensive%20wind%20deflation%20of%20floodplains%2C%20and%20sand%20accumulation%20in%20the%20dune%20fields.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Aug%202022%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22English%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%22ARTN%20104077%2010.1016%5C%2Fj.earscirev.2022.104077%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%220012-8252%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22BGC9F53I%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-02-23T23%3A13%3A54Z%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22key%22%3A%22MVVALA23%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A9129767%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22creatorSummary%22%3A%22Capaldi%20et%20al.%22%2C%22parsedDate%22%3A%222022-08%22%2C%22numChildren%22%3A2%7D%2C%22bib%22%3A%22%3Cdiv%20class%3D%5C%22csl-bib-body%5C%22%20style%3D%5C%22line-height%3
